WHAT IS KALEIDOSCOPE
Kaleidoscope is a muti-faceted 9 week program for boys and girls from 12-17 geared to give teens valuable insight into different artistic disciplines that will enable them to gain knowledge, personal skills, self reliance while forming friendships and building community.
Each workshop consists of three parts...
PAST WORKSHOPS (Dependent on Interest and teacher availability workshops may be added or changed each summer)
Journaling- Journaling is an amazing tool for self-expression and self-discovery. In addition, journaling provides a healthy means for working through life’s challenges and reflecting on one’s ups and downs. This journaling workshop is an exploration into 4 different journaling techniques. The techniques we will visit include art journaling, prompt journaling, list journaling, and currently journaling. The participants will have an opportunity to learn about each technique, see examples of each technique in action and have time to work on their own journal. Journaling can open up a whole world of possibility and serves as a wonderful time capsule of your experiences.
Stop Motion Clay Animation 1 - The Creative Design Process Part I of 3- Begins with the Creative Design Process- Learn how to, brainstorm, develop and create a blueprint for your Clay Animation project using the elements and principle of design. This is a 3-part class (*Class may be extended an hour if necessary to 7-10pm) A cell phone, or ipad and permission to download “Stop Motion Studio” app or I movie, can and will needed for Clay Animation 2 and 3.
Stop Motion Clay Animation 2 Part 2 of 3- Using your script or storyboard as your blueprint, you will build your own set/ backdrop to create the atmosphere and mood of the animation. Paper, glue, glue gun, scissors, sticks, paints and markers will be available for use. Students are free to bring their own materials if needed. Students will begin to create their character/s from clay.
Stop Motion Clay Animation 3 Part III - Students will finish creating their clay characters while learning the process of changing facial expressions and movements of body parts. (It is here that students will need the cell phone with the “Stop Motion Studio app downloaded for class) A technical overview of the app will be given so students can utilize it to the fullest while creating their animation. * Please make sure cell phone has enough storage for Approx. 300 pictures.

Selfies vs. Self Portraits
This session will examine the difference between Selfies and Self Portraits where selfies represent how we want the world to see us while Self Portraits examine parts of ourselves. Participants will view examples of selfies and self portraits and practice making each.
Yoga & Mindfullness-Through the practice of Yoga, we strengthen our bodies, grow emotionally, learn to control our minds and finally unveil the soul. It is through the purifying of the body and the mind, we can begin to experience many gift of yoga practice, the most cherished one – compassion and humility, understanding that deep inside we are all the same! Teens benefit from mindfulness, meditation and yoga physically, mentally, emotionally, socially and even academically. Starting practice at this age will empower teens to navigate hectic adolescence time, reduce stress and deal with day to day tasks.
Paper Sculpture Birds symbolize the power that helps people to speak reflectively and leads them to think out many things in advance before they take action. Just as birds are lifted up into the air by their feathers and can remain wherever the wish, the soul in the body is elevated by thought and spreads its wings everywhere. -Saint Hildegard of Bingen
Career Building/Vision Boarding- Learn skills that will help you land a job, discover what you want to do when you graduate, or get your resume ready.
Painting to Music Combined music and painting can be a powerful tool for self expression. Paint, listen to music and leave worry behind.
Museum Trip*- A day exploring a museum. Take a journey with us as we ride the LIRR into the city, visit a museum, have lunch and explore the surrounding sites. This is an all day affair, bring a bag lunch, backpack and comfortable walking shoes.
Fused Glass Jewelry- Learn about Fused glass and techniques for creating your own jewelry. You will make a pendent for a necklace and a pair of earrings. ( Fused glass needs to be fired, jewelry made will be available for pick up at next workshop.)
Cooking & Art Show Finale- This last workshop will include a cooking workshop for teens & their families who attended any workshop plus a gallery exhibit of work created throughout the program.

Each workshop consists of three parts...
- Instruction- each topic is meant to expand one’s knowledge, learn specific benefits, and acquire skills
- Creativity- making art or a specific item that can be used beyond the workshop and in their personal lives
- Application- actively participating within the group and /or using the skills learned on one’s own.
